Every generation is drastically different from one another. Things come and go, and times change. People in their respected generation view the world differently then others of different generations. My generation, or class, is drastically different from people like my parents. After evaluating the Beloit College Mindset List, it becomes evident how times can change dramatically over just a few years.
There are several numbers on the Beloit College Mindset List that I can refer to and agree with. Number 27, computers have never lacked a CD-ROM disk drive, is a good example. I totally agree with this one from my generation’s perspective. To us, it seems like computers have been around forever. It has become such a habit to see a computer with a CD-ROM disk drive. We forget that there actually was a day where computers didn’t have a CD-ROM disc drive. Another number I agree with is number 58. This one states that Beethoven has always been a good name for a dog. People in my generation really don’t know a lot about the musician/composer, Beethoven. We pretend like we do and would like to think that, but in reality we don’t know very much at all. However, the real Beethoven we know about is the dog in Beethoven, the movie. It is a classic movie in our time period and when we hear Beethoven, we think of the dog, not the musician. I agree with number 70, the artist formerly known as Snoop Doggy Dogg has always been rapping, as well. Our whole lives, we have seen Snoop Dogg all over MTV rapping. Therefore, when we think of him, we think of rap music. Number 62, having hundreds of cable channels but nothing to watch has always been routine, pertains to my generation, or class, also. I know that I am definitely this way. We have DirectTv at my house and more often then not I find myself flipping through channels wondering why nothing good is on. Our generation doesn’t really know what it is like to only have a couple channels or not even have T.V. at all.
Although there are many numbers from the list that I agree with, there are some that I don’t really agree with at all. One that I especially don’t agree with is number 1, few in the class know how to write in cursive. I feel like there is no truth to this at all. I clearly learned how to write cursive in second grade and was forced to practice it throughout grade school. I don’t write in cursive anymore, but I sure as hell know what it is. I know that my fellow classmates are the same way. Another one that I don’t agree with is number 50, toothpaste tubes have always stood up on their caps. Personally, I remember the old school toothpaste tubes that didn’t stand up on the cap. I actually still use the toothpaste that is in a big tube that doesn’t stand up.  I know that not all of my classmates or ones from my generation use the old school toothpaste tubes like I do, but I know they know what it is.
The Beloit College Mindset List explains the current lifestyles of people from my generation though a list format. Some of them are very true about what we have come to be; however, some of it is pretty ridiculous.  There are several numbers from the list that don’t really pertain to us at all.

  1. I totally agree with what you said about how the list has some good points, but a lot of them don't have anything to do with us at all. A lot of the points really had no relevance to our generation at all. I can also completely understand what you said about not having anything to watch. In our generation it seems everyone has cable, and I know a couple people who actually don't have cable, and I didn't even know what to say when I found this out.

  2. Austin, I use old school toothpaste tubes too. Your so right about the toothpaste fact, I did not realize that I never see toothpaste tubes standing up.

  4. Austin, I do not agree with the cursive writing, but every area is different with the cursive writing. In my area, most people in my class do not know how to write in cursive. I do agree with the toothpaste having always been standing on its own.

  5. You make some good points, Austin. I mean, there are definitely some things that I bet people in our class don't know that we know. But then how many of the people think the same thing about you? (Sorry, tangent) Anyway, good post man.

  6. Well, I do agree with your statement on the toothpaste tubes, considering that most of us go cheap and that's what's cheap. Not sure I agree with you on the CD Rom drive, though, cuz I distinctly remember having the old green screen comps with the floppy drives. Also, coming from a small town, cable consisted of 20 some channels for us, and the country kids were lucky to have 3-4 channels.

  7. Beethoven was an awesome movie! Well the first one was at least, I didn't think much of the sequel attempts.

  8. I agree with your first statement. I don't think I have ever seen a computer without a CD-ROM drive

  10. Man I've never had a toothpaste tube that stood up on its lid. And I kind of remember floppy discs but by the time I was old enough to want to use them it was CD-ROM's

  11. Great Post! I remember when when my dad first brought home a computer with a CD-ROM disc, I was so excited that I could finally play games on the computer. I remember floppy disc, but I think I was too young to play on the computer at that time. Did they even have floppy disc with games on them?
